The Cheetah
The cheetah is big cat that mostly lives in Africa and some parts of Asia. It is mostly known as the fastest land animal in the world. Cheetahs received their name because in Hindu, cheetah means “spotted one.” Cheetahs are mostly carnivores who prefer to run after their prey than attack them in one spot. Cheetahs are one of the most interesting and unique big cats existing.
Cheetahs have tan fur that is covered in black spots across its body. However, the cheetah does have a very distinct white chin and abdomen. Its tail has about four to six black rings around it, and the tail is usually 28 to 32 inches long. The cheetah is the most distinct because of the black marks under both of their eyes. These marks are commonly referred to as “tear marks” because they look like black tears below the cheetah’s eyes. The cheetah’s teeth are fairly small due to its large nose. An average cheetah usually weighs about 80 to 140 pounds in its adult hood. At the shoulder, the cheetah is about 32 inches tall. However, male cheetahs are slightly larger than female cheetahs.
Cheetahs are carnivores that eat hoofed animals that weigh less than 90 pounds. Some of these animals include gazelles and young wildebeest. Sometimes they will also eat smaller animals such as rabbits, warthogs, and birds. Cheetahs do not have excellent night vision like other big cats, so its hunts in the morning and early afternoon. Cheetahs prefer to look for its prey by sitting in a large tree or standing on top of a termite mound. When in pursuit of its prey, a cheetah will chase an animal for up to 3 ½ miles. Cheetahs will not chase other animals for an extreme amount of distance because it runs so fast that it burns up its energy very quickly.
Cheetahs are mostly known for their great running speed. The fastest that a cheetah has been recorded running is 70 miles per hour. That easily makes the cheetah the fastest land animal in the world. The average speed of a cheetah is about 45 miles per hour. However, because cheetahs run so quickly and burn their energy quickly, they cannot run for large amounts of time. After about 200-300 yards, the cheetah must take a rest or else it will pass out. The main reason why cheetahs can run so fast is because their bodies are built for it. Unlike other big cats, cheetahs have foot pads and retractable claws. Also, its large nostrils make it easier for it to take in air quicker. Its large liver, heart, and adrenals also help its physical response to be quicker. The cheetah has a long body, small collar bones, light weighted bones, and vertical shoulder blades which give it bigger strides. Its spine works almost like a spring so its back legs can come in and then go out as the cheetah takes each stride.
The cheetah is a beautiful big cat that lives in many parts among the world. It is mostly know for its speed and power. People should not kill cheetahs for their fur coats because cheetahs are another wonderful part of nature that most people take for granted. If you ever see a cheetah in the wild it will probably be relaxing somewhere or sleeping. If you ever see a cat that looks like a cheetah, just look for the tear marks below its eyes.
